![]() I think the game guide WITH the game (which drove up the price) didn’t help its case. ![]() Nintendo Power even had a $10 off coupon for EB (which I used, thank you very much). The only marketing I ever saw was in Nintendo Power. I was 11-12 when Earthbound came out, the marketing for it was bizarre, but I dove headfirst into it. So do you think the marketing of Earthbound hurt the games image and hurt it's sales? Still its a rare instance that back then a big title game made by Nintendo would sell poorly. There are plenty of other factors on why Earthbound sold poorly as well, such as being more expensive than most games, RPGs not taking off yet in the States, just being an all around unconventional game. I just find it hard to believe that people saw this and thought "Oh well this game stinks, forget it." Not too mention its main advertisements were in Nintendo Power magazine with plenty of articles about Earthboudn so the core audience had to be aware of the humor of the game to some extent. ![]() This is the mid 90's so "gross" was kinda a thing with stuff like Ren & Stimpy and things like that. I was 11-12 when the game came out and I was fully aware that it was just an advertisement, especially since it came with scratch n' sniff spots on the same add. With saying "This game stinks" and other various adds similar to that, do you really think the target audience believed that? Something I always see mentioned by Youtubers or articles on why the game sold poorly was it's marketing campaign. I think for most people who own a Super Nintendo, Earthbound is a certified classic but as we all know it sold terribly.
